About GPA Tools
Learn how GPA is calculated in Nigerian universities and beyond.
Understanding GPA Calculation
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardised way of measuring academic achievement in universities. The calculation is straightforward, but understanding the process helps you better manage your academic performance.
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Units
Where Quality Points = Grade Point × Credit Units (per course)
CGPA Calculation
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) encompasses your entire academic journey, calculated by:
CGPA = Total Quality Points (All Semesters) ÷ Total Credit Units (All Semesters)
University Grading Systems
Different universities use varied grading systems. GPA Tools supports both the NUC 5.0 for universities and the 4.0 scale for polytechnics.

Common questions
How do I calculate my CGPA on a 5.0 scale?
Multiply each course's credit units by its grade point to get quality points. Add all quality points, then divide by the total credit units. That gives your GPA for the semester. CGPA uses the same formula but with cumulative totals across all semesters.
What CGPA do I need for a First Class degree in Nigeria?
Under the NUC 5.0 scale, First Class Honours requires a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) covers a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers every semester you've completed so far.
Does this support the polytechnic 4.0 grading scale?
Yes. Toggle "Polytechnic" in the Calculator section and the grade points switch to the 4.0 scale.
How do I convert my Nigerian CGPA to the US 4.0 scale?
Open the Conversion tab. The formula is: US GPA = (Nigerian GPA ÷ 5) × 4. For a 5.0 CGPA that gives 4.00; for 4.25 that gives 3.40.
Is this calculator free to use?
